Exploring Pathways

Westside is intentional in designing individual pathways that support nurturing each student’s varied gifts and talents. Whatever ambitions they have—whether it's pursuing carpentry, aiming for a career in law, or aspiring to join the Police Force—students can access a range of learning options. They can study General and Applied subjects and have the opportunity to gain a certificate qualification while working towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).

The College partners with a range of external providers, and our flexible learning environment caters to students who want to explore a different pathway. Students at Westside are involved in over 25 different certificate courses; some are at the College and others are off campus. Combined with over 25 Senior subjects, there is something for everyone. We work with students to ensure that they are ready for the next steps in their educational journey.

Career Opportunities

As part of an intentional career development program, students are given opportunities to explore personality strengths and weaknesses, discovering how to use their unique gifts and talents to serve their community. This program aims to equip students with the information and skills they need to make informed decisions about their post-school futures. The program also includes careers expos, work experience, careers events at the College, Senior Education and Training (SET) plan development, and specific classes for students in Year 9 and 10.

Work experience placements are highly valued at Westside. They provide students with valuable insights into how classroom learning translates to the workplace, and an understanding of the work environment and potential career options. As a result, students gain confidence, and maturity, and develop greater motivation to continue their studies and/or pursue further training.

Careers Breakfast

The Careers Breakfast has become an annual tradition at the College, where past students from diverse fields share their career journeys with some of our Secondary students. A panel of past students offers personal stories and insights into the world of work. Additionally, students have the opportunity to network with alumni over breakfast, gaining valuable career advice and information from those who have walked the path before them.

I love the values we have here—achievement, belonging and care—and the college is able to achieve those through longevity of staff. And that establishes a great culture.

One staff member had a huge impact on me and shaped the person I am today. Now a teacher here, I still marvel at the care and time teachers invest in students.

I really valued having positive relationships and honest conversations with my teachers. I was able to take their advice without offence, and that enabled me to work better.
